A sadder note about the Lower Toccoa. Roger Losier was a great canoeist and trainer of his Boy Scout Troop. I saw him only twice, once while Dave Garrity and I were on the bank with throw ropes while Roger passed, bailing with a giant pickle barrel while screaming at the teen in the bow to keep paddling! And once in the office of a neurologist I knew. Roger did not look happy. I think he was taking Tegretol for seizures, and he did not like the side effects. So, I guess he didn’t take it. He was running sweep on the flats of an easy run on the Lower Toccoa, and they were all shouting and laughing. Then they realized they weren’t hearing from Roger, and went back to look for him. He had fallen out of the boat and drowned. My guess is that he had not been taking his Tegretol, and as can happen, laughter can set off a seizure… He died laughing on the water….
