A young man was visiting the area with his family and staying on a house boat in the pool above Willamette Falls. He apparently missed all of the signs and buoys warning of the falls, lost control of his boat, tried to swim out of his boat to shore, and got swept over the falls. The boat has been recovered; the person has not been found. Willamette Falls is a 20-50 ft falls (depending on where and how you measure it) that is the second largest falls in the US by water volume. While it has been run successfully by kayakers, it has been illegal to run it and the difficulty of the falls is mostly prohibitive. It is the middle of a transition from being an industrial center back to ownership by local tribes, and has been the focus of a decade plus of restoration work by various entities. Currently, there is no easy hand portage around the falls (it generally requires getting onto the highway), this complicating trips down the Willamette River Trail (Eugene to Columbia R). There are efforts ongoing to build a portage trail. https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/clackamas-county/investigators-why-missing-kayaker-launched-near-willamette-falls/283-8f69e11f-8984-4e66-ac1e-714c99a15dc7
