The victim was a 30-year-old Park City native whose identity has yet to be released. He had attached a surfboard to an obstacle in the river. He fell, became tangled in the rope, and drowned. Bystanders cut the rope and took him downriver but failed to revive him. River surfing has become a popular phenomenon in Montana rivers, allowing access to surfing in noncoastal towns.
