American Whitewater’s volunteer of the month for April, 2004 is Dag Grada. Dag resides in De Kalb, Illinois and has been active in kayak instruction for Northern Illinois University and the Chicago Whitewater Association for well over a decade. He has been active in American Whitewater’s work to gain access to the whitewater of northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan including monitoring the ongoing removal the Michigan’s Sturgeon River dam and obtaining releases on Minnesota’s St. Louis River. As one of American Whitewater’s original streamkeepers for the northern Midwest, Dag has been exploring and documenting steep creeks in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Minnesota’s Lake Superior North Shore. In recent years Dag has been spending winters exploring the whitewater of the Dominican Republic (see photoe) where he guides and arranges trips for snowbird boaters. His clients have included the Twitch (2000) video team. You may have seen Dag most recently volunteering at the American Whitewater booth at Canoecopia in Madison.
