Little Sandy Creek is a popular intermediate run near Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. The normal access from a narrow shoulder at the Route 26 bridge is rather steep and exposed to fast-moving traffic. Many paddlers have found a welcome alternative: the back-yard of the Little Sandy Church of the Nazarine. The friendly folks in this small riverside church welcome paddlers any day except Sunday. Last year pastor Chad Harvey and his congregation decided to offer a picnic lunch to paddlers. When I saw the sign reading ?Kayakers Welcome ? Free Food? I thought someone must be playing with their marquee! But later my wife Sandy stopped by and found out that it was for real. This year they asked for our help in publicizing the event. We announced it on Boatertalk and a half dozen club chat rooms. The water was low on the Big Sandy so most paddlers were elsewhere. But Charlie and Sandy Walbridge, Chara Whittemore, Andy Woodsworth, and Jim Snyder stopped by on May 30th to enjoy the meal and meet the congregation. It was West Virginia hospitality at its finest! Remember that when we use this area we are guests of the church and should behave respectfully. Please change clothes in Rockville, which is quite remote, and keep the noise down in this quiet residential area. Remind your friends that one thoughtless person could spoil things for everyone.
