American Whitewater’s National Organization of WhitewaterRodeos Offers Freestyle Kayak Judge Training Seminars
(Asheville, NC) American Whitewater’s National Organization of Whitewater Rodeosannounced today the formation of the first official freestyle judge trainingseminars. “It’s been evident for thepast few years that the sport of freestyle kayaking is taking off,” said JayneAbbot, American Whitewater’s Events Director, “and the need for a pool ofquality trained judges from which events can operate is critical to the sportslong-term growth and popularity.”
In 2001, NOWR will be rolling out the certification programto a few select sites with plans to build up the program in the future toaccommodate all event needs across the country. “We won’t be able to do it all this year, but 2001 will give NOWRa start in the right direction,” said Abbot. The first training session will be held at the National Paddling FilmFestival, February 24 & 25. A fewother select sites are being targeted and the final schedule will be determinedshortly and posted to www.nowr.org. A top competitor and judge, training will beprovided by Jimmy Blakeney, current President of the US Freestyle KayakAssociation.
Anyone interested in becoming a certified card-carrying NOWRjudge may attend the seminars. Registration will be limited and cost is $10.00per person. Those wishing toparticipate are encouraged to sign up early with the American Whitewater EventsOffice. The seminars will focus onfreestyle judging and scoring systems, along with competition formats. There will be two areas in which a personcan become certified: technical scoring and variety scoring. After attending one seminar, participantswill be able to accurately judge technical moves, and be well versed in thevariety scoring system.
