Cleansweep for the Chattooga. January 29, 2006.
10 a.m.
Highway 28 access on the Chattooga River.
Saturday January 28th: Hike into the headwaters
9am:
I am going in at Burrell’s Ford and planning on covering as much of the river as daylight will allow. I don’t want to take a large party into the headwaters. That is the reason for keeping this separate from the cleanup for the lower sections. There are a few spaces left in my group for this if anyone would like to join in. (Call or email me and let me know)
The headwaters are a very special place that needs to be treated with the utmost respect. A decision on boating the headwaters for study should have already been made by the Forest Service, but this is not why we are here. We are here for the river and it’s surrounding corridor. Even if boating is allowed at this time, which is questionable, we will not be boating. Please respect this!
Sunday January 29th: Cleansweep for the Chattooga
8 a.m.
I will be at the highway 28 access. (closest to the river) *All clubs if you could have the names and addresses of all members in your party written down for me would be great. All others could you please sign in when you arrive* If the turnout is large enough I would like to launch another effort to cover Section III a little earlier than the scheduled time. We’ll have to see on this though.
I know that there are a lot of paddlers that do not paddle during the winter months. Don’t let the time of year hold you back from helping out. In general the accesses and surrounding areas are in the worst shape. These areas are definitely in need of special attention, so if you don’t want to paddle the river your help would be greatly appreciated in these areas.
10 am:
Scheduled launch time from the 28 access. I haven’t been to the area in quite a few years, but logically I would figure that this section would be in the worst shape. Unfortunately, everyone that enjoys this incredible river does not show her the proper respect that she deserves. The ease of this section means that it gets the most use from this group of user’s and would require the most work.
4-5 pm:
Off loading of all trash. The FS has told me that we can leave the trash at the access and they will pick it up. We will have to hike it off the river but it will have been well worth it.
6-7pm:
Dinner is served! All are welcome. (location, not for sure where we’ll camp yet, but there) Beef stew is the order of the day! (sorry vegans I am a meateater)
I hope that we have a great turnout! This is a very worthwhile cause that deserves our best efforts. I want to thank the Tarheel Paddling Association and the Dan River Rats for all there help in organizing this. Thank you!!!
