Dear Risa:
My congratulations to American Whitewater on the 13th occasion of the Ocoee Rodeo, one of the nation’s largest gatherings of private boaters. This year, the Rodeo is being held in conjunction with the US Canoe and Kayak Team trials that are taking place at the Forest Service’s splendid Olympic Whitewater course on the Ocoee River.
I regret not being able to attend today’s Ocoee Symposium, to discuss with the many participants the economic implications that whitewater recreation has for Tennessee’s 3rd District and much of the surrounding region. This gathering is an important part of our Ocoee Region emphasis, and will provide much valuable information on the needs of outfitters, stakeholders and recreational enthusiasts. I recognize the economic value of downstream recreation to Polk County and the 3rd District and support its continued growth.
I believe in the shared usage of our rivers, particularly such an extraordinary resource as the Ocoee. By building the Olympic whitewater course, the taxpayers have already invested millions of dollars in downstream recreation. This investment has helped to turn the economy around in the region and will generate considerable income and job creation for the area with our support.
We must insure that this important segment of our economy continues to be supported by TVA, the state of Tennessee, the Forest Service and local government. The river and the value it creates is part of our common heritage, and should be shared by all. Best wishes for a successful event.
Warmest regards,
Zach Wamp
