AW Forum in New Kayak Session

November 2, 2001

American Whitewater has announced it will be contributing articles to Kayak Session, a new magazine will bring ‘coffee table’ quality to the imagery chronicling whitewater, including the critical role conservation and access play in the sport.

“This publication will focus on the excitement of the sport that has driven excitement and technical advances,” states Risa Shimoda, American Whitewater Executive Director. “We will contribute an article to each issue, reminding the paddling community that American Whitewater staff and volunteers are working 24/7 so that whitewater flows and access can be protected or restored.”

The upcoming Kayak Session visits the recent Controlled Flow Study on the Upper and Cascades Sections of the Nantahala River (North Carolina, US). A ‘playfully technical’ article by Conservation and Access Associate Kevin Colburn and stellar photography by Chistopher Smith illustrate the beauty, fun and excitement of driving a scientific study that will impact this river for decades.

“The ‘demo issue’ of Kayak Session we published in July (debuted at the World Freestyle Championships) received such a positive response from the entire community that the need for such a publication is now obvious,” notes Philippe Doux. “ Before anything, Kayak Session is visual.” We would like to promote paddling through beautiful shots, similar to those that one would find in surfing or snowboarding magazines. The concept is not new, but we want to apply it to kayaking.”

“While Kayak Session will carry photos of sensational action shots, it is not a photo-album: there will be loads of interesting articles, paddlers profiles, interviews, gear reviews, first descents, expeditions, sequences shots and much, much more…We would like to believe that people that don’t even paddle will buy the magazine, just because kayaking looks good… and we all know it does! Simply, we would like to bring something different – simply original."

The next edition is scheduled for production in December. For more information, please contact Risa Shimoda at risa@amwhitewater.org or 1-866 boat4aw. For information concerning USA distribution: Contact Drew Hicken: 1-877-766-4757- rwp@atpaddle.com.
