Get your story out there.
The American Whitewater Journal is the oldest publication of its kind, and yours can be the next story it tells! Whether you’re an explorer of rivers, a passionate river steward, or someone who likes to blow off steam on the local run every weekend, you’ve got a story to tell and we’d love to hear it. To submit a story and photos, please go to our Journal Submission Page. Our deadline for the topics listed below is March 8th. At this time, we're looking for stories on any and all of the following:
Women in Whitewater
There are not as many women paddling whitewater as there are men. Period. Still, at every level, on every river, on every day, there are women out there doing incredible things in whitewater (like AW Board Member Susan Hollingsworth, shown here). This is a great opportunity for our readers to see those stories. As Marie Wilson of the White House Project succinctly states, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” So, if we hope that girls and young women of today will come to gain an appreciation for whitewater rivers tomorrow, we need to be sure that the role models who are already out there enjoying, exploring, and fighting for the preservation of free-flowing rivers around the country and the globe are seen and heard. If you think you’ve got a story that could make a difference, please send it in.
Best Runs for Intermediates
There are a ton of great rivers out there. Too many for any one of us to paddle in a lifetime. To help our readers separate the great from the good, tell us about your favorite intermediate run. We're looking for stories about runs that are Class III to easy Class IV and that are no longer than a day trip. What do you remember about the first time you paddled this stretch? What do you love about this stretch of river? Why should others check this section out? Don’t be afraid to write about less popular runs, or if your favorite intermediate run happens to be the Ocoee, tell us something unique about it that we might not notice otherwise.
Locals' Favorite
Locals' Favorite highlights an AW member's favorite river, run, or playspot. If you've got a gem in your backyard that you wouldn't mind sharing with a few extra friends, write it up. Give us the details of where it is, when it runs, how to get there, and then tell us what's great about your favorite run and why visitors shouldn't miss it. Please include photos (and captions/credits) to help readers understand why you love it.
