In March, the Western Federal Lands Highway Division awarded a construction contract to Active Construction Inc. of Tacoma, WA to pave 9.7 miles of the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River Road beginning at the eastern intersection with Lake Dorothy Road and extending to the Middle Fork Campground. Construction will begin later this spring and continue through August 2016. Discussions about this project have been underway for many years, and it's finally getting started.

The contractor will be able to close the road on weekdays from May 5 to October 31, but the road will be open on weekends from 12 pm Friday to 12 pm Monday. American Whitewater worked to negotiate weekend access during project planning. It is our current understanding that the road will not be closed on all weekdays and we are optimistic that some weeknight access to Mine Creek and Granite Creek (aka Concrete Bridge) will remain available when the contractor is not actively engaged in construction on the lower section of the road (they will begin work near the Middle Fork Campground and Trailhead). We will schedule a meeting with the project manager once the project office is up and running.

Funding Need: Make a Contribution to Enhance Public Access

For the past two decades American Whitewater's members and affiliate clubs have worked with land managers and other community partners to improve public access and restore the natural habitat and ecosystems of the Middle Fork. The Valley is now a haven for our outdoor-loving Puget Sound community, but existing trails and recreational infrastructure are insufficient and unable to handle this surging attention. Valley trails are deteriorating and riverbanks are once again taking a beating. The road will be improved, and we have made some strides in improving river access, but a lot of work still remains to improve the recreational amenities along the road corridor. American Whitewater is working with our partners to raise funds for recreation improvements, and you can help protect this special place by making a donation today. All proceeds will be matched by a grant secured through the National Forest Foundation. Every donation, no matter how small, carries us closer to our goal!

We have something incredibly special in the Middle Fork, with towering mountains, lush forests, clean rivers, and hundreds of wilderness adventures reachable within minutes of our cities. To sustain such natural splendor in harmony with a growing metropolis is a major community achievement and a continuing challenge. Your donation will help maintain this precious balance. Please take part in continuing this legacy.
