Syracuse, NY—During April 25-28th, Expert kayakers from all over the Northeast will rendezvous for the first ever “Creek Week” in Old Forge, NY.

The Central Adirondack Association (CAA) and American Whitewater (AW) have teamed up to sponsor “Creek Week”. “Creek Week” is scheduled to take place in late April, a time when Adirondack rivers are consistently swollen with snowmelt runoff. Boaters will be able to choose from over 30 whitewater runs within a 90-mile radius of Old Forge.

It is expected that paddlers will branch out and experience the dozens of other spectacular runs available in the Old Forge vicinity. Paddlers will be able to find a range of paddling difficulty on rivers like Johns Brook, Boreas, Grass, and the Cedar just to name a few. Even during the driest springs, excellent boating can be found on the Bottom Moose, Hudson, and Black Rivers.

“Creek Week” takes advantage of whitewater enthusiasts’ familiarity with Old Forge as the base of operations for the Moose River Festival each October. “Creek Week” promises to be a different type of event from Moose Fest. It will not feature a large Saturday night gathering, instead a series of boater-friendly events have been scheduled throughout the week including special “paddler nights” at local bars and restaurants, the 1st annual Old Forge Whitewater Film Festival at the village’s Strand theater, and the Teva Moose Extreme Freestyle event to be held Saturday afternoon (4/27).

The Teva Moose Extreme Freestyle event is a stop on the Teva Whitewater Tour taking place all across the country. The sport’s top athletes will be competing on the Moose’s Class V drops to earn the right to compete at the Teva Whitewater National Championships sanctioned by American Whitewater.

The “Creek Week” event was designed to spur on the Old Forge economy in its shoulder season. Chris Koll, the event organizer described the event as “an opportunity for whitewater paddlers to demonstrate their collective economic clout and boost the local economy by as much as 3%.” The local economy already receives a shot in the arm by Moose Fest another event started and organized by Chris Koll.

In the summer months, Old Forge is a popular resort community that features a selection of restaurants, bars, hotels, campgrounds, funky shops, and even a first run movie theater. April represents the off-season for Old Forge and paddlers will be able to find great deals on hospitality.

American Whitewater is an organization dedicated to conserving and restoring America’s whitewater resources and to enhance opportunities to enjoy them safely.
