Dan Peschio

April 3, 2002

Last summer, as we were casting about for a new, sharp Gauley Festival Volunteer shirt design, long time AW Director and Gauley Fest Volunteer Coordinator Joe Greiner called with some good news. Joe told us about Dan Peschio, a local (for him) graphics designer, and the two phrases that stood out in that conversation were “extremely talented” and “wants to volunteer”.

And Joe was right. Dan merely asked, “what would you like and when would you like it”? He then went on to design one of the most popular Gauley Festival Volunteer shirts ever. For those of you who have never been there, the annual volunteer shirts are the hottest commodity at Gauley Fest. And Dan’s design was enthusiastically received. Here’s a peek –

Eager to do more, Dan recently presented AW with a new t-shirt design for our merchandise line. These t-shirts should arrive any day now, and we are taking orders. Please use this link for order information.

And Dan also steps outside his comfort zone to pitch in. In early March he spent a particularly miserable weekend (weatherwise) volunteering on a Forest Service project in response to a call from AW for help.

AW appreciates all of Dan’s efforts – both indoors and out. We are grateful not only for his talent, but for his generosity and the enthusiasm with which he delivers each and every project.

Naturally, Dan’s interest in volunteering for American Whitewater was born of his interest in paddling. And this interest would be best left to Dan’s own description:

For paddling proclivities, I began my adult boating life as a Merry Swampster in the black (yes black) waters of the South Carolina Low Country, but soon heard the siren’s call of whitewater. Driving all night on Sundays and showing up for work Monday red-eyed and useless, an unfortunate and regular side effect of my new addiction. I’m an egalitarian boater and will still head to Charleston for a weekend in the sea kayak, but not as quickly as I will abandon all reason when Zoli calls at 6:30 am to tell me the Watauga is running. In the future, I hope to keep fine tuning the balancing act and see even more of the world from the vantage point of a small boat. Special thanks to Kurt Krucke for showing me the light – filtered blue as I looked up from the bottom of the Chattooga. Glug… glug….
