American Whitewater has a new Events Coordinator and volunteer editor for its hallmark publication, American Whitewater. Mardee Allcorn is the Events Coordinator, joining Michael Phelan Events Director, in the Asheville, NC office. Tim Nickles of Boulder, Colorado, will be providing the editorial leadership for the American Whitewater beginning with the May, 2003 issue.
“As a past successful small business owner, Mardee brings the skills and initiative that characterize the entrepenurial spirit to American Whitewater,” comments Michael Phelan, AW Events Director. “Her experience as a sophisticated events planner will leave an indelible mark on the look and feel of all of AW’s upcoming festivals and fundraising endeavours.”
“I am thrilled that we are continuing the tradition of dedicated volunteers driving significant elements of our business,” notes Risa Shimoda, American Whitewater Executive Director. “Our challenge in producing the journal is multifold: we need to reflect the character and respond to the interests of our audience, whitewater enthusiasts. We must also compete in a multimedia environment – with even our own popular website as a competitor for its ability to provide instant information to the world. With Tim’s enthusiasm and skills, we’ll do better than just keep up and will have a bunch of fun in the process.”
“I’m very excited and honored to take on the role of editor of the Journal and further its mission of supporting the organization and entertaining and educating its members.” says Nickles, bringing to the table science degrees from the University of Oregon and the University of Colorado, recent experience in editing for ReclaimDemocracy.org, and a love for mountaineering and paddling. “As the newcomer, I’m open to suggestions from anyone interested in helping AW continue to increase the effectiveness and impact of the Journal.”
Allcorn’s joins AW from having owned an event-planning business that executed meetings and celebrations for tens to thousands of guests. “My role is to increase our effectiveness in engaging whitewater enthusiasts and increasing their involvement with AW, and I am already growing that commitment after seeing the hard work put forth by the AW Staff and Board.”
