NOAA’s Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Services (AHPS) program has an updated web link and slide presentationwhich should be of interest to white water enthusiasts and their families.
NOAA also has a whitewater page that discusses safety information for rafters, cavers, and canyoneers.
American Whitewater is working to develop a partnership with NOAA to share stream forecasting information with our members and the public via our website.
Some of the NOAA products are invaluable to whitewater paddlers. For instance the NOAA provides long range quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs).
These forecasts have helped Midwest Regional Streamkeeper Dag Grada who observed that “this NOAA product has greatly enhanced my ability to catch Summer ‘thunderstorm’ runs on river reaches that are traditionally considered spring snow melt only.” Check it out if you are not already familiar with it.
Dag added that “It is a great advantage to have a forecast of not only when and where it may rain, but how much. Great potential partnership!”
