Help Stop Attacks on the Clean Water Act

Several congressional representatives have taken the lead in getting the Army Corps of Engineers and the EPA to withdraw damaging new jurisdiction guidelines that were issued in January and prevent the administration from going forward with rule changes that would eliminate Clean Water Act protections for tens of millions of additional acres of
wetlands, lakes, ponds, and streams.

Four members of the House of Representatives, Reps. Dingell (D-MI), Leach
(R-IA), Oberstar (D-MN) and Saxton (R-NJ), and three members of the Senate,
Sens. Feingold (D-WI), Jeffords (I-VT), and Boxer (D-CA) are circulating a
letter urging the President to stop the rulemaking process and withdraw the
guidance. View a PDF COPYof the House letter (the Senate letter is the
same) sent to their colleagues and the letter addressed to the President.

If you want to help save the Clean Water Act from being stripped of its power and scope, contact your Representative(s) and Senators asking them to sign the “Dear Colleague” letter to the President, and address the following topics in your letter or call:

1. It is helpful to say that you are strongly opposed to the effort by the Bush administration to limit the scope of the Clean Water Act protections over many waters.

2. Refer to the letter being circulated by Reps. Dingell, Leach, Oberstar and Saxton in the House and Sens. Feingold, Jeffords, and Boxer in the Senate to stop the administration from removing Clean Water Act protections from our nation’s waters; say that you agree with the letter and that you urge the Representative or Senator to sign on.

3. Also, please ask your Representative or Senator to become a co-sponsor of the Clean Water Authority Restoration Act (H.R. 962 and S.473) to make clear Congress’ intent to apply the Clean Water Act broadly.

Thanks for helping to save the Clean Water Act!
