American Whitewater is excited about the upcoming Crystal River Wild and Scenic and Alternatives Community Summit taking place October 26th, from 5:00 to 8:30 pm in Carbondale at the Roaring Fork High School Auditorium (2270 CO-133, Carbondale, CO 81623). We hope you will join us in learning about and providing feedback on all the potential options for protecting the upper Crystal River that the Steering Committee has identified. Food will be provided along with an interactive agenda. Save the date!

American Whitewater has been acting in a support role for a group of diverse stakeholders with interests in the Crystal River over the past six months. The group has been discussing shared values and visions of the river as well as learning about potential future threats to those values. As the group nears the end of its scheduled meetings, they are presenting to the community a suite of approaches that could provide protection and enhancement to the Crystal River. It is the charge of the group to make a recommendation to the local government co-chairs – Town of Marble, Gunnison County, Pitkin County, and Colorado River Water Conservation District – on what approach or approaches are best supported by the community. Wild and Scenic has long been discussed for the Crystal River. This committee is focused on better understanding how that designation or other opportunities could be used to achieve things the community does agree on, like no future dams or diversions off the river.

If you are in the area, please come out to learn more about the work the steering committee has done and learn about ways to protect one of Colorado’s last undammed rivers!
