Alert Regarding Engineered Log Jam Installations
| Reporter | Alex LaLonde |
There is significant human made wood hazards on this section of river that currently are poorly marked and should be completely avoided. I have requested of the NITNCRD post more signage on the river banks and at all possible put in's above this run. Below is an email copied from their Watershed Restoration Coordinator:
In an effort to ensure all river recreationalists’ safety and enjoyment on the river this summer, the Nooksack Indian Tribe’s Natural & Cultural Resources Department would like to inform you that we will be constructing 58 Engineered Log Jam (ELJ’s) and Flood Fence Structures as part of the NF Nooksack Farmhouse Phase 4 Restoration Project this summer. The structures will be built on both the right and left bank sides of the river and on channel islands within the active channel of the North Fork Nooksack River. The project is located between Maple Falls and Kendall, downstream of Maple Canyon (downstream of Maple Creek) near the Glen at Maple Falls development, river mile 47-48. Construction will occur July thru September 2020. The Tribe has constructed Phases 1, 2a, 2b and 3 of this project since 2014, so there are existing in-water structures to be aware of as well. This is the fourth and final phase of the Farmhouse Project. Please be aware multiple low bridges are, or will be installed, over the active channel to access portions of the project. In addition, please watch for heavy equipment, construction, coffer dams, existing and new in-water log structures. Large warning signs will be placed upstream of the bridges to warn boaters to exit the river. Please plan to portage around the project site! I have attached the River User Notification Sign that we have posted at popular put-in locations and community boards in the Glacier, Maple Falls and Kendall areas. Please contact me if you have suggestions for other put in locations where signs would be helpful. In addition, I have attached a Portage Route map showing the approximate bridge locations and preferred portage routes. Please forward this information to interested parties and be sure to notify your fellow river users, guides and clients.
