River Description

There are a number of access points on this run. Starting from the top (Access - river miles) they are: Monkton Road - 0.0, Merryman Park/Corbett Rd - 2.0, Glencoe Road - 4.5, Sparks Road - 5.4, Phoenix Road 7.2. This river length was created to indicate a stretch where the river level is best described by the Glencoe gauge, not necessarily what might be a usual run. Summer parking on weekends can be an issue at all the accesses. There is parking at Monkton Road, but as of Summer 2020, either the County or State has reduced the amount of parking that once was permitted at that location, so it's wise to get there early. Buddy Hihn access comments 2025: **Monkton Rd.** This is super crazy on weekends. Often patrolled with ticket issued. Be sure to park diagonally to maximize parking. Pay attention to all signs that restrict parking. This is the hub of the NCRR trail aka the Torrey C. Brown Trail. **Corbett Rd.** No Parking, Private Property. No River Access, it is just horrible. **Glencoe Rd.** At the NCRR trail lot on Home Rd there is parking for six cars. There is river access though a bit muddy. Often used as a tuber take out. Beyond this point the river is shallow, quiet and lazy with mostly cut banks and point bars. **Sparks Rd.** On the North side parking is at the nature center with fourteen designated spaces. There is river access immediately below the bridge. South side parking is all the way up at the burned out Sparks School. Weekends and evenings after school the Recreation Council participants use all the parking. **Phoenix Rd.** There are eleven designated spaces at the river access point. Not the best access point. The stairs are steep and the pad at the river is way to small. Don't forget the poison ivy on the staircase. There are a couple of shoulder pull off areas near the lot. This is the last take out prior to City property. Don't miss this take out or the city will confiscate your boat! No further access and fines apply.

  1. Upper Gunpowder Strainer alert - there is a new strainer on the UGP that requires a portage. It is located at the top of one of the 'major' rapids on this section of the river. There is an island at the top of the rapid; most of the water flows to the left of the island (which is where the strainer is). The channel on the right side of the island is not runnable. The strainer can be portaged by beaching on the island above the strainer and dragging your boat in the shallow water over the right side of the strainer. The strainer is approximately 1/3 mile below the rail trail bridge below Corbett Rd (see map) and 1.25 miles above Glencoe Rd. There are additional new strainers on the UGP; all have at least a narrow passage to get through them. I'll post further information about them (including pictures) later in the week.
  2. Power line hanging about 3 feet above river just above the Corbett Rd bridge (see map). I reported it to BGE tonight. The bridge is next to the intersection of Corbett Road and Falls Road.
