Menomonee
B) MenWesTosa: Hartung Park to Hart Park (3.66 miles)
Alerts
Log in to add an alertA large tree spans the river at Hansen Golf Course Bridge (just downstream of the confluence with Underwood Creek, downstream of Capitol Drive). The 'root end' (at river-right) lies against the shore, the 'branches' end (at river-left) is jammed into the bridge. Over time, it will accumulate more wood against it. Until it is removed (by county park maintenance crews), it will be a mandatory portage. However, tall grasses and steep banks will make that quite awkward.
PLEASE READ the 'Rapids Descriptions' for information about alternate put-ins. Not only on this, but on various rivers/runs, paddlers may opt for longer or shorter runs than our listed/described section (putting in further upstream, or taking out further downstream).
\\\***************************************************************************
It is crucial paddlers be aware that sections upstream and downstream of this listed section can lead to VERY different experiences because of differences in the bed and banks.
\\\***************************************************************************
Upstream of this recommended/listed section (virtually all the miles between the 'MenFalls' section and our listed put-in for this section) the river is flat with virtually no whitewater. Additionally, there are areas which have heavily wooded shores where deadfall (wood, branches, and whole trees in the river) is common. Sometimes (and at some flows) some may be easily paddled around, ducked under, or 'log boofed' over. However, others will require portage.
\\\***************************************************************************
Upstream of this listed section there are at least a couple massive blockages necessitating relatively long portages (and likely bushwacking through muddy floodplains and undergrowth on shore).
\\\***************************************************************************
Immediately downstream (putting in at our listed take-out for this section) lies the 'MenTosa' section. At low-to-moderate flows, much of it is merely a half-step more difficult than this section. However, at higher flows MenTosa takes on an entirely different character, taking full steps higher in difficulty (and danger)!
\\\***************************************************************************
DO NOT PUT ON DURING HEAVY RAINS OR WHEN RAIN IS IMMINENT! DO NOT CONTINUE PAST THE LISTED TAKE-OUT AT FLOWS ABOVE 500-600 CFS UNLESS YOU HAVE PROPER WHITEWATER EXPERIENCE AND EQUIPMENT.
