River Description
I ran this section in April 2012. The putin is at a closed bridge, and is actually private property of the brick mill house. The land owners were home and more than friendly. I was granted permission to access the river and run the rapids on their property while they watched with their kids.
The Brighton Mills rapid is the remains from 3 mills which used to be located on the property, and care should be taken while scouting as the shores are littered with sharp debris. The first drop is a straightforward dam slide to a shallow landing. This feeds into a rapid fire series of small but somewhat technical drops including a small boof over a hole, and a V-slot move. It had many of the charactoristics of the Woodhull or Taylorville section of the Beaver, all in a few hundred feet. This has been one of my favorite discoveries in the area, and best kept secrets.
There is no gauge, however anyone heading into the area for the Kinderhook or Claverack Creek may find it worth stopping by as it is a short detour. If you do decide to give it a go please be mindful of the landowners and ask permission to keep this resource open.
The rest of the run is Class II, and quite mellow as the river winds down to the Hudson through woods and marsh.
