April 2025 - Log Below Springs in First RapidAmanda Hellmann
Apr 6, 2025

Unknown if it’s the same log but after the springs, in the first big rapid, there is a downed log on the right that covers large portion of the river. Passable on river left. However, still in that rapid, there is another downed log on river left (not as large) so be sure to make move to river right following the first log. Passable in center and right. Worth getting out and scouting at the springs to get a good look of both logs.

I didn't see any flagging or logjams but there is one recently broken off tree spanning the entire river a short distance below the springs with no possibility of sneaking through. It didn't float there - it broke off and fell across. It might be there a long time. Easy to see and easy portage on river left. Could be a big problem for an inexperienced boater floating on the right side of the river.

Log reported in May seems to have moved downstream of the big springs below Canyon Creek Campground. There's a log now blocking most of the river around the corner from the springs at the start of the first rapid. This log has gap against the left bank to pass safely. More trees have fallen into the river above Wizard Falls hatchery, but none blocking the river.

There's a new as of Spring 2024 river wide log just above the springs, downriver of lower canyon campground. Right before the river bends left and and the first rapid. Very rough cordinates are 44°29'52.4'N 121°38'18.1'W.

From Monica Morin:

We ran from Camp Sherman to Monty on July 13-14th. There are 3 mandatory portages and one discretionary portage due to log jams. There are a handful of other areas where you have to navigate through trees but there is a way through at 1300 cfs. This includes a small island where the main channel is completely blocked and the left channel is open, but we did not grab a waypoint for this one. Basically you must never let your guard down. You must have solid boating skills, even though the whitewater is only class 3, the river is fast and continuous with minimal room to eddy out above these log jams.

  1. There are two portages close together at
    44.629168, -121.583665.
  2. The discretionary portage is at
    44.664935, -121.583665
  3. There's a very mature river wide log jam below Whitewater River at
    44.629168, - 121.602456.

(Thanks, Monica!)

6/16/2011 There are currently 5 log/log jams completely blocking the river channel between Lower Bridge Campground and Camp Monty. The 1st log is at Candle Creek Campground and you should take out river left above the rapid when you first see the campground, there is no good place to stop for a raft after that point above the log. The portage is through the campground and not short or easy. The 2nd log jam is in a straight away and involves multiple trees blocking the river. It is visible from above, we had to portage river right through THICK brush dragging our boats over the end of the logs. Log number 3 is on the left side of an island and is described at the put in on a poster. You can run river right through a congested channel or an easy portage on the left channel, river right. Log number 4 is a single river wide log on a left bend, easy to see from above. We portaged river left over the end of the log lining the boats from 50 feet above. Log number 5 is a single river wide tree probably a mile or two above Monty Campground. We were able to run over the left side at 1850cfs but would be a bigger problem at lower flows. The trip took 6+ hours running a raft and a cat boat, with the portages. Won't be back until wood is gone. Tough portages, few eddies for any larger craft. Too many logs to be enjoyable but SO beautiful.

ORIGINAL POST:
There is a river wide tree (mandatory portage!) below the gorge campground just before canyon creek... the portage is best to the river left. It is nasty...
5/12/09 Large log completely across river 3/4 of the way into first long Class 3 rapid approximately 1/2 hour into float. Portage must be made before beginning of rapid as it is too fast with no place to take out once you have entered the rapid. At best, you will lose all of your equipment; at the worst you will lose your life here.

The drop that is a bad deal is the Candle Creek class III+
There are twin river wide logs that are both killers and 1/2 way into the rapid...Know where this drop is because being over committed will lead to major problems.
