Multiple Strainers on Upper SF Salmon Caribou RunScott Harding
Feb 8, 2024

As of February 3, 2024 there are three river-wide strainers on the Upper South Fork's Caribou Run. The first is about one mile below the South Fork Trailhead put-in and can be glimpsed briefly from above before you're in the current that leads to it. Get out early and portage left. Strainer is at 41.098693, -123.074057, a short distance upstream of the first bridge on the run. The second strainer is visible from above and has large pile of logs on the river left bank with one extending all the way across the river about 0.4 miles downstream of the Petersburg Fire Station. Strainer is at 41.12756, -123.09618. Get out at the very top of the cobble bar on the river right as soon as you see the strainer and portage right (it's possible on the left but a bit sketchy getting out and over the logs). The third strainer (41.142831, -123.182881) is immediately above the 15-mile marker take-out and can be seen by looking upriver from the take-out. It's easily visible when boating. At medium or higher flows, kayak-sized craft can paddle through a small channel to the left of the strainer. Portage left.
