The Klamath Safari includes a trip from Spring Island down to a camp just above Stateline on day 1, a mountain bike ride back up to Frain Ranch and a second run from Frain Ranch down to just above Stateline on day 2, and then an inflatable kayak trip from Stateline down to Access 1 on day 3.

Hell's Corner Flow Study - Day 2 - Thomas O'Keefe

Jul 15, 2020

In anticipation of removal of Klamath River Dams, Klamath River Renewal Corporation performed a controlled flow study to better understand the impacts of dam removal on potential summer flows in the Hell's Corner reach of the Klamath River. Currently hydropower peaking operations provide enhanced flows during the day in the summer. American Whitewater and local outfitters investigated flows of 800 cfs to evaluate the boating opportunity that will be available in the future following dam removal.

Kayak Trip Down the Upper Klamath - Thomas O'Keefe

Thomas O'Keefe, Jennie Goldberg, and Pat Welch on a trip down the Klamath River. We hired a guide from one of the local outfitters in Ashland to drive with us to the put-in. He drove our shuttle and then met us at the take-out. We then drove back to Ashland.

Shuttle Options - Nick Sinderson

You can simplify your shuttle, if you have a high clearance 4 wheel drive vehicle and a bike by using the south bank rd (which has three different names; Copco Lake Rd., Ager Beswick Rd.. Topsy Grade Rd.) By google mapping Copco Lake Rd. you'll see where to go. Some people (including me) find using this access a bit unnerving as you'll be putting in right above Caldera with no warm-up. But it relieves the need for a shuttle driver and cuts shuttle time by hours.

John Gangemi makes a rare rafting appearance with 3 River Stewardship Institute participants. The group paddled the Upper 3 miles of Hells Corner at low water and the entire run at one gun the next day. We toured the hydro facilities and discussed the impacts of dams on rivers, and caried out a mock flow study.
