River Description
This is primarily a class II float with class IV Cascade Rapids upstream of the put-in or start higher up above the Agnes Creek confluence to tackle the class IV/V gorge run.
You'll need to break out the inflatible kayaks for this one as it's a 55 mile down the lake on the passenger ferry Lady of the Lake to get to the take-out. You can find information on their web site for shuttle bus service in the valley which you will need to reach the put-in. You will also want to check the latest road conditions with North Cascades National Park. The road network took a beating in the October 2003 floods. There is a put-in about 0.3 downstream of Bullion Camp that is the standard access for the class II run. You can continue a short distance upstream to an alternate put-in about 0.5 mile upstream of Bullion where the road begins the climb up to High Bridge. This adds the class IV Cascade Rapids (just downstream of Agnes Creek). Finallly, you can head up to Tumwater Campground if you want to run the expert run, a short class IV/V run through the gorge from Tumwater Campground to the Agnes Creek confluence.

Trip Reports
Log in to add a reportIn the Summer of 2004, a friend and I paid $60/boat
round trip to get our hardshells on the Lady of the
Lake. We had a friend with a car but could only get to
the wash out in the road. We hiked up to Tumwater
Campground and put on the river. The Tumwater
Canyon is beautiful, walled in class IV-V. We portaged
one early because of sieves, but found some great
rapids and a fun 15ft(ish) waterfall in the canyon. We
ended up hiking out of the canyon because of a river
wide log in a very bad spot. This was just a couple/
few rapids above High Bridge. This is a great run with
difficult logistics.
inflatables are a smooth trip on the lower(below High Bridge)...after the 2003 flood, access to the upper is tough and no one has run it since, though the run through Tumwater gorge may just be worth the effort
Shane Perkins approaching the first bend below High Bridge.
