Croton Dam to Hudson River - Island Rapids
Alerts
Log in to add an alertWood has been removed from the tops of the two channels at Island Rapids. The entries to the channels are clear as of this date. Much of the fallen tree across the diversion channel at the pump house has been sawed away, but scout the channel to determine whether the water levels and paddler skill allow for safe passage.
About 30 to 40 yards above the river-left channel is a log across part of the approach to it. As you prepare to enter the river-left channel, approach it from river left rather than aiming to go down the middle or river-right of the river-left channel.
The tree across the entry to the river right channel at the island has been removed. The channel is now clear.
The diversion channel at the pump house and dam at the top of Black Rock Lake is still a hazard. Boof the dam or carry around it.
Covers most of the channel near top of drop on right channel. This is the rapid below the silver lake lowhead dam. Scout or go left. Visible a lower water, but above 5' won't be visible.
Log crosses diversion canal at right of low-dam (first dam on run) at water department. It's visible if you peek down the canal, and avoidable but lots of flow going under it and a trapped log away from being a death trap. Dam can be boofed or portaged at river right.
Steel cables just below put in are hazardous ! I ran the river at 3.75 on the gauge and was able to get under them but keep an eye out for them.
Take Note: A pair of approx 1/4' steel cables are strung across the width of the river only a few hundred yards down from the put in. At lower levels you can duck underneath them (at approx 3.5 ft. they were well above my head and I didn't need to duck) however they become a serious hazard at higher levels (today in the 5.5+ range) they were boat level and hard to see, they caught me and flipped me and sprung into my friends face. Not sure what their purpose is but they are visible from the road by the guard house for the park suggested to portage or paddle around if possible.
