Subject: WARNING! Magalloway Strainer!
WARNING! We paddled the Magalloway at 900 cfs rel today Saturday, June 22, 2019. There is a strainer in the center of the river at the right turn immediately after putting in. This strainer prevents easy access to the mid-river slot in the ledge drop that follows. Safe options are river left or river right which are more challenging then the usual river center approach. HIGHLY RECOMMEND LAND SCOUT BEFORE RUNNING. I made 2 successful runs on river left in my open boat. Mike Cummings and Jean Miller made successful runs in kayaks on river right of strainer. Unsure how obvious the upper part of the strainer will be at 1200 cfs; however, the lower section sticks up higher and has some green growth on it. If a paddler loses control or flips over above this strainer the consequences could prove very serious! A rescue would be nearly impossible due to the mid-river location of the strainer and the fast moving water. The downstream 'Old Man's Put In. might be a better option until this strainer is cleared.
Update: Tim Jones reports as of July 2021 the strainer was removed earlier this year. No info if it was removed by the river or by paddlers or if there is a possibility of anything else new downstream.
