River Description
This description is for the section from Rockwood, PA to Markleton, PA, which is about 7 miles long. Assuming medium flows under 3 feet on the Markleton gage, the descriptions of the rapids are pitched toward novice kayakers and open-boat canoeists who are gaining comfort in Class II rapids. In addition to the rapids described below, there are several other Class I rapids and ripples. Compared to the Middle Yough, this section of the Cassselman advantageously lacks a flatwater section equivalent to the doldrums, as a steady current is generally maintained throughout. Various lunch spots can be found, including underneath the railroad trestle about halfway through this section. Bike shuttling is possible along the GAP trail, which parallels the river on the left bank
The putin is on the river left/downstream side of the Rockdale Rd. Bridge in the center of Rockwood, PA. There's typically plenty of parking to be found in the GAP trail parking lots just up the hill from the boat launch. The take-out is on river left/downstream side of the Markleton Bridge if you have a PA Fish and Boat Comm. sticker or on river right/upstream side of the Markleton Bridge if you don't. (The comment about the Fish and Boat patrolling was seemingly salient before 2020, but in subsequent years, the presence of patrolmen has seemingly ebbed.) Also, be thankful for the work of the Casselman River Watershed Association to enhance access for whitewater boaters.
Area Camping
These state parks will not allow any rowdy-ness or ALCOHOL.
There are also a number of private campgrounds in the area.

Put In - Rockdale Rd. Bridge, Rockwood, PA

Pura Vida
At medium flows, a large rock in the center of the river signals an end to the flatwater section above this rapid. The river picks up speed through a class I section that is generally straightforward to read-and-run following a line in the center of the river. After a brief flattening of the water, boaters encounter a class II drop. At first glance, it can be somewhat challenging to spot an ideal line. The current generally flows toward river right, where a couple of successive ledges produce hydraulics that can be punched through.
At flows around 4 feet on the Markleton gauge, these holes are big enough to partly swamp an open-boat canoe even if the waves are punched at perpendicular angles. An alternative at this level is a sneak route on river left between a couple of rocks.
Dragon Bend
As the river bends around the town of Casselman, a couple of boulders appear on the left bank. At favorable flows, this is potentially a surfing spot with decent return service in the eddy downstream of the boulders.
Hook Slide
As the river bends left downstream of the town of Casselman, a riverwide ledge system comes into view. At medium flows, a number of lines can be run through this rapid. At lower levels, the least scrapy line is probably the river left line.
The waves are potentially surfable, though the return service is not ideal.
Olympia Rapids
Downstream of Hook Slide, boulders on river left signal the arrival at Olympia Rapids. The most straightforward line is generally the right-center line, though some dodging of small pourovers and knuckle rocks may be necessary. A river left line could be run, though it's not as compelling as it first appears, and there are potentially some modest consequences for novices who catch the rocks at a bad angle.
Over and Out
Almost immediately downstream of Olympia Rapids, the river bends to the right. Known as Over and Out, a straightforward line is to remain right-center through the top of the bend. At the bottom of the rapid, there is a ledge system on river right that is either runnable or a little trashy depending on the water level. Boaters who stay in the center-right channel can decide in the moment if they want to punch the holes to the right or follow the easier line in the center.
Take Out - Markleton, PA
Take-out - Markleton, PA. The take-out is in Markleton, PA on the river right side upstream from the bridge on the river side from the railroad tracks. There is a nice park on river left downstream from the bridge, which would appear to be a good put-in, but from time to time, someone from the PA Fish & Boat Commission appears to harangue boaters about the PA Fish & Boat Commission sticker ($18.00 fee for 2 years [apparently required at all public PA river accesses, but which only comes up at the Markleton river access]) and threaten a $150.00 fine as a penalty for not having the sticker on the boat.
Trip Reports
Log in to add a reportNIce Intermediate class II. Ran on 10/06/2018 at approximately 2.60 ft. in perception swiftwater kayaks. My girlfriend and I are still learning how to read the water having only played on class I and one other class II the Middle Yough both great runs to learn on. I did take a swim on this stretch of river but not due to it being a technically difficult rapid more so due to inexperience and that I was running too close to my partner and wasn't able to read the best route until I took the wrong one lol. I guess everyone gets dumped at some point and that's a learning experience as well. A couple pointers for those planning on running this stretch of river there is no cell service in the area so make sure you screenshot directions before you leave to the take out at Markelton and from there to the put in at Rockwood. Plus directions home. We had to just kind of blindly follow one lane roads through corn fields following the lay of the land trying to stay close to the river to find the put in after dropping off the takeout vehicle. Also be aware that there is a PA Fish & Boat Commission official that regularly monitors the park at Markleton so make sure you have your PA Fish & Boat Commission launch permit stickers on your watercraft if exiting river left at the launch area or alternatively exit river right under the bridge to avoid any hassles. There is a 150 dollar fine for not having the stickers so keep that in mind.
Ive never ran from Salisbury down to Meyersdale but have ran everything else down river. Meyersdale to Garrett is a pretty calm relaxing paddle if is what you are into then you are in luck. If your lucky and go when the river is up you may be able to surf in a few holes. Not bad great for people not into whitewater. From Garrett to Rockwood there is some nice rapids at the beginning for then it drops to flat water for a good while. Some spots if you are a floater you may get blown back upstream. Overall really easy with some playboating ops. From Rockwood down to Markleton is a lot more enjoyable if you dont like to paddle a lot of flat water. At higher levels big bouncy waves and you can find that this section can offer a good bit to play around with as well. I ran this the other day at 2.26 and it was low but still runnable. I plan to run this when its high to play in the double falls section. Should make nice play holes
The last couple miles pick up to some nice class 2+ fun
The beginning of a class 3 rapid.
