The Green River in Vermont provides a remote ,scenic, and exciting whitewater boating opportunity below the Green RIver Dam. American Whitewater and the Vermont Paddlers Club have been working on the relicensing of the Green River Dam since 2010 to require scheduled whitewater releases. We helped the owner, Morrisville Water & Light, conduct a whitewater boating study and advocated for scheduled releases at both the federal and state level. Those efforts resulted in legal challenges in both state and federal courts including the Vermont Supreme Court which, in the first of its kind ruling, required scheduled or timed whitewater releases. Unfortunately, these legal challenges have resulted in years long delays, but finally, we are expecteing that whitewater releases will begin in 2026.
