Rogue River Declared Navigable

Oregon’s Department of State Land has just issued a final ruling and determined that the Rogue River from RM 68.5 to 157.5 (Grave Creek to Lost Creek Dam) in Josephine and Jackson Counties (where the river flows through the towns of Grants Pass, Rogue River, Gold Hill, and Shady Cove) is indeed navigable. This is the section of the Rogue upstream of the popular Wild and Scenic multiday trip but it includes reaches that are popular for whitewater day trips.

Rivercane on the Cheoah

American Whitewater recently received a grant which provides an opportunity to explore the reintroduction of rivercane (Arundinaria gigantea) to the Cheoah River.  The North Carolina Department of Commerce’s 21st Century Community program, Western Regional Office, proposed the project and obtained the grant in their efforts to develop a sustainable economy for Graham County.  This grant was provided by Revitalization of Traditional Cherokee Artisan Resources which is a Cherokee Preservation Foundation program ultimately funded by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian.

American Whitewater has spent well over a decade working with the dam owner, state and federal agencies, and other stakeholders to secure  boatable pulse flows on the Bear River’s Black Canyon.  The first release occured on April 20th, 2008, an extremely cold and windy day.  Roughly 50 people braved the weather and were treated to some super fun Class IV whitewater.  AW staff and volunteers were there to paddle the river, shoot some video, and spend the evening with consultants
