New River Development Stalled (WV)

Just four hours before the hearing that would have decided whether or not 2200 homes would be built on and near the rim of the New River Gorge, the developer withdrew their application. In a letter, the developer stated that “After careful consideration, the applicant has determined it will be necessary to revise its application … to more accurately reflect the scope and nature of the Roaring River project in Fayette County.”  The development company continued that it “remains confident that the Roaring River

7 Rivers Film Premiere with AW

Saturday March 12th, 9:00pm Great Dane – DowntownMadison, WIIn Summer 2004, six kayakers set out to explore the upper reaches of Seven Sierra Nevada rivers, a feat never accomplished by a single group in one season. Plunging 25,000 feet of vertical descent in 150 miles of river, their path took them through some of the most unique landscapes found anywhere in the world.Dropping into un-scoutable, un-portageable, and quasi-navigable gorges is both breathtaking and terrifying, and losing your shoes in the

Lehigh River Releases Up For Debate

The following anouncement comes as the result of several years of advocacy by AW, the Lehigh Valley Canoe Club, and other user groups.  The process will allow the ACOE to propose changes to the management of the Lehigh River and recieve public feedback on those proposals.  There is a very good chance that different proposals will be on the table that could enhance whitewater boating opportunities or impact them.  It is very important that the paddling community participate in this opportunity to enhance

Stop Development Along New River Gorge!

A developer is proposing to build upscale houses along a 10 mile section of the rim of the New River Gorge.  The 4300 acre development would impact vistas in the gorge and would forever change the character of this beautiful national treasure.  The development requires a zoning change by the Fayette County Planning Commission and approval of the County Commissioners in order to move forward.  The Planning Commission and County Commissioners can stop this project dead – but can also

Chattooga Headwaters Update

American Whitewater expects to receive the USFS decision on whether or not to lift the ban on boating 21 miles of the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River no later than April of this year.  The decision will come at least 6 months past the agency’s legal deadline, however American Whitewater has chosen to accept this delay.  We feel that granting the USFS adequate time for analysis of our appeal of the 2004 decision to continue the boating ban will only improve the chances of

A Grand Solution

When I first started working on Grand Canyon issues 7 years ago, the private permit wait list was only a decade long, now it is nearly 25 years and at least 2% of all applicants die before they can fulfill their dreams.  In addition, the commercial outfiiters, private boaters, and even the Park Serrvice were at loggerheads and would barely speak with each other after decades of frustration. We’ve come a long way in 7 years and the most fundamental shift

AW’s January Volunteer-Charlie Vincent

American Whitewater’s success restoring rivers largely rests on our network of dedicated volunteers working with staff on local river issues.  This month we want to celebrate Charlie Vincent’s contributions to the paddling community.  Charlie is a dedicated volunteer working altruistically for the paddling community on restoration of the Bear River in Southeast Idaho.  Advocating to restore whitewater flows in the arid landscape of Southeast Idaho with it’s plethora of irrigation ditches does not make you the popular person in meetings.

Victory for the Ashlu (BC)

It’s been a long process but this week the Squamish Lilloett Regional District (SLRD) Board issued their decision and denied the re-zoning request required for construction of the proposed Ashlu Hydroelectric Project. This decision followed a long series of public meetings and emotional testimony. In reaching their decision, the SLRD Board recognized the numerous concerns put forward by those who expressed opposition to the project, noting that the project did not fit with the SLRD’s own policies on these projects,

Etowah River Protection Meeting Jan. 12

There is a budding movement to protect Georgia’s Etowah and Amicalola rivers by having them designated under the state’s Wild and Scenic River legislation.  A committee of local citizens called the Etowah Scenic River Committee has been formed to champion the designation.  Specifically, the goal of the Committee’s current proposal is to protect 6.8 miles of the Etowah and 14.4 miles of one of its major tributaries, the Amicalola.  These particular river reaches are on land owned by the

New York Area Boaters Get an Early Christmas Gift!

American Whitewater is happy to report that New York area paddlers got a very special Christmas gift this year – two days early.  The Ausable River is one of AW’s 2004 Top River Issues because a dam owner on the river has been actively seeking to deny public access to the whitewater river downstream of their dam.  On December 23rd, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission dealt the power company a lump of coal, a denial of their attempts to exclude paddlers

New Gage For Nantahala Cascades

American Whitewater worked with Duke Power and other Stakeholders to provide realtime flow information for the Nantahala River through a multi-year dam relicensing process.  AW was interested in gaining better flow information on the Cascades and Upper Nantahala sections, around which the Nantahala River is bypassed through a large tunnel.  While the Nantahala’s main flow is bypassed, Whiteoak Creek and other tributaries regularly provide boatable flows in the reach after significant rains.  The gage is now online at:  http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nc/nwis/uv/?site_no=03505550&agency_cd=USGSThe gage

Grand Canyon River Plan Summary

By now you’ve probably heard a lot of things about the alternatives listed in the Grand Canyon Management Plan, which were good, bad, or downright incendiary. The surprising truth is that the Grand Canyon Management Plan (http://www.nps.gov/grca/crmp/index.htm) is actually a really good start with some really strong ideas that are worth pursuing.  All of the alternatives are improvements over the status quo, and the Park has come out with a solid proposal that gives a little something for everybody.   American Whitewater
