This hearing was a critical milestone for these bills and moves them closer to the President’s Desk and being signed into law. American Whitewater and our partners worked hard to secure the hearing and we are thrilled to celebrate this win with our members and

Over 50 Paddlers Enjoy Inaugural Weber River Releases (UT)

This past Saturday, June 4, was the first of four negotiated Saturday releases that will occur annually between May-July for the Scrambled Eggs section of the Weber River (UT), a 1.8-mile roadside run south of the cty of Ogden. The release day was well attended and critically restored river flows to a region severely impacted by dams and diversions. American Whitewater has spent the past seven years working towards these releases and we hope paddlers enjoy them this year and

Recreational flow releases have been scheduled on the Scrambled Eggs Section of the Weber River for June 4, June 18, July 2, and July 9 of this year, subject to change if unexpected conditions occur. These are the first releases of their kind on this reach, following years of negotiations and studies that led to the issuance of a new 40-year federal license for the hydropower project. Flows will unfortunately be lower volume than expected this year. American Whitewater advocated

Full Access Restored to Eagle Creek (OR)

We’re happy to announce that the U.S. Forest Service has lifted its long-term closure of Eagle Creek and paddlers are now able to legally paddle the creek, including Punchbowl Falls. The Forest Service had closed the burned area to public access for nearly five years following the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire. American Whitewater advocated for this re-opening and played a key role in ensuring that the falls itself was not closed just as access to the creek was reopened.

Help Us Protect Flow for Recreation (CO)

The aridification of the Colorado River basin is taking a toll on the water supply of the region. This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the Colorado River Compact, the document that dictates the distribution of water across the seven states and Mexico who rely on it. In the time since the signing of the Compact, large reservoirs have been built to supply water to growing farms, ranches and towns. Those reservoirs are at critically low levels. Great Falls Catawba Releases Delayed Until Next Spring (SC)

The start of flow releases on the Great Falls of the Catawba have unfortunately been delayed from this August to next spring. Weber Releases Get Green Light For This Summer! (UT)

On Friday, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) gave the green light for recreational releases to begin on Utah’s Weber River this summer! The move came when the agency approved the Whitewater Boating Plan, which was a critical step prior to the flow restoration called for in the new license for the Weber Hydroelectric Project. American Whitewater recently requested that FERC expedite approval of the plan so the public could enjoy the Weber River this year and we are delighted

Take Action to Help End DC Area Paddling Ban

Montgomery County Maryland, on the outskirts of Washington DC, does a strange thing. The County prohibits paddling without a permit in county parks, and does not offer any permits. So through a bureaucratic sleight of hand, paddling is banned on the rivers flowing through public lands. On paper, these closures affect popular sections of the Potomac, but they’ve also had real impacts on preventing and criminalizing paddling on smaller streams like Seneca, Cabin John, and Sligo creeks. We make it

Public Comment Needed to Stop a New Reservoir on the EF Virgin River (UT)

A proposed reservoir upstream of the Wild and Scenic East Fork of the Virgin River is undergoing environmental review and we need paddlers to speak up in opposition!    We reported on this project last in early 2021, when we received good news that the proposed Cove Reservoir Project would require a full-scale environmental review with robust opportunities for public input instead of streamlined approval. That outcome was largely due to comments submitted by American Whitewater and our partners.

Eel River Dams License Expires, Opening Long Road to Dam Removal

Today marks the beginning of the end for two antiquated hydropower dams on the Eel River, one of the largest whitewater river systems in California. The federal license for Pacific Gas and Electric’s Potter Valley Project expires today, and the utility has decided that it no longer wants to own and operate the hydropower project. Scott and Cape Horn dams are now on track to be decommissioned and removed. Once this is complete, the Eel will become the longest free-flowing
