Accident Description

Not The wild and scenic section

7/9/21, 15:07 hrs. (EAST FRUITDALE) -- Tragedy struck on the Rogue River Friday afternoon, after a boat flipped over near Chinook Park.  One occupant was reported missing when the 911 call was made.

Numerous rescuers from Rural Metro Fire, AMR, Grants Pass Fire and PD (with an aerial reconnaissance device), and the JoCo Sheriff's Office converged on the scene.  The missing boater was located in the water and was extracted by a RM and AMR crew who began CPR.  The boater was transported to Three Rivers but did not survive.  The other occupant of the boat was rescued safely by a sheriff's deputy.

Many people enjoy recreating on the Rogue River every summer.  Unfortunately the Rogue also has a history of being unforgiving to those who get caught in it's hazards.  Submerged rocks, swift current, and dangerous undertows claim lives each year.  Rescuers are issuing another plea to remind all who recreate on this beautiful (and wild) river to ALWAYS wear a life jacket.
