Five people rescued from Juniata River in Blair County

The rescue took place along East Loop Road and Allis Lane in Frankstown Township where two adults, two teenagers and a toddler were removed from the water. The group was reportedly floating on the river in two rafts when they got stuck on debris blocking the river. No one was injured in the incident but crews say they were not wearing life jackets.

Geeseytown Fire Chief Dennis Estep said the medium water level of the river made the rescue more difficult since the water was moving swiftly yet not deep enough to accommodate rescue boats.

“This time of year the water is still really cold, anytime you’re in the water you’re going to get hypothermic,” Estep said. “They were not wearing PFD which could’ve ended very badly.”

The following water rescue teams were on scene:

  • Geeseytown Community Fire Company
  • Cambria County EMA rescue teams including the Jackson Township Vol. Fire Company and Portage Fire Department
  • Nanty Glo, along with Williamsburg Fire Company
  • Hollidaysburg Ambulance
