Richard S. was guiding a raft on the Indian River during a 3 boat trip for the North Creek Rafting Company. In Gooley Step rapid, anothe raft collided with his, knocking him out of the raft. While in the water, the right side of his face suffered four fractures, including the orbital bone of his eye. The rafts regrouped at the confluence of the Indian and Hudson rivers. The bleeding was controlled and the guides determined that he probably had not suffered a concussion. They discussed the possibility of him exiting the trip and walking back to the put-in, but there was no one who could take over his raft. He continued guiding his raft down through the Hudson River Gorge. He was able to finish the trip.
He required exensive reconstructive surgery.
