Accident Description

Alica Monahan, 41, died while teaching a swiftwater rescue class. She was an expert kayaker, a Rescue 3 swiftwater instructor, and an 11 year veteran firefighter. The accident occurred above Paton's Run on the Nantahala River. She was apparently swimming in the river when she stopped unexpectedly and floated downstream. She was recovered downstream, and CPR was unsuccessful.
