Accident Description

Taken from the Supplemental Report:  "On 6-27-76 at approximately 04:05 pm writer was made aware that there had been a boating accident (coroner's report cites death at approximately 2:00 pm) on the East Fork of the Salmon River, approximately 5.4 miles west of Yellow Pine.  Writer, along with GP, Yellow Pine, Idaho, traveled to the accident scene.  Upon writer's arrival, writer was informed by a Boise, Idaho MD kayaking with Bentley, that Bentley had expired approximately 10 minutes prior to the writer's arrival.

Writer was able to determine through interviews with witnesses that Bentley was following another kayaker through fast water when his kayak became perched upon a rock crosswise to the river current.  As the boat was under a great amount of water pressure, subject was apparently pinned in his boat.  After several attempts to free himself, Bentley yelled for help.  Several eye witnesses tried unsuccessfully to get Bentley to free his boat.  By this time he became weakened by the strong river current and was pressed backwards underwater.  After several minutes, his boat broke free from the rock's hold.  He at this point, exited his kayak, either by his own power or the river current.

Bentley was retrieved and with the help of others, they got Bentley to shore.  First Aid (mouth to mouth) was administered by the two Boise doctors who were also kayaking with him.

Above MD stated that he inserted a plastic tube into Bentley's stomach in an attempt to revive him.  After several minutes of both doctors working over Bentley, it was agreed that he had passed on.
