Accident Description

A Philomath man was pulled out of the Willamette River by law enforcement earlier this week. Two Benton County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the river for a water rescue at around 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27 in the Corvallis area, according to an agency media report.

The deputies arrived to find 61-year-old David Card clinging to a log and fighting to stay above water, the report states, noting Card had a white paddle board strapped to his right ankle. With the paddle board submerged beneath the tree, Card was being pulled under the water until a deputy gave him a knife to cut himself free, according to the report, which adds deputies couldn't get into position to make the cut safely because of the river current.

Once he was freed, deputies tossed Card a floatation device attached to a rope and brought him to the shoreline. Card did not need medical attention. He and a friend caught a ride from the deputies to their vehicle in Hyak County Park.
