Accident Description

From Nancy Dagle: In an article today in the Sacramento Bee it stated that the man who fell off his sit on top kayak on the Sacramento/American River this week has died.  He had a life jacket attached to his boat but was not wearing it.  The Discovery Park area is at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers.

The area is class 1, but has a good deal of flow due to rain and the flows from both the American River and Sacramento Rivers.  As this area is the confluence of the two, one article states that the accident occurred on the American and the other on the Sacramento River.  The American River flows into the Sacramento.

A man was rescued after his kayak capsized in the river in the Discovery Park area of Sacramento on Thursday, officials said. The man, described as in his 50s, was not wearing a life vest when the kayak capsized, the Sacramento Fire Department said. A good Samaritan saw the man growing weak in the water and threw him a life ring several times to no avail. He then got in his pontoon boat to help the victim just as Sacramento city fire crews arrived at the scene, the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers.

Firefighters got the man out of the water and into a rescue boat where they began to perform CPR. The man was later brought to a local hospital and is in critical condition, fire officials said.

 UPDATE

A man died Sunday from injuries he suffered after his kayak capsized on the Sacramento River near Discovery Park last week as the river swelled with increased water flows, according to the Sacramento Fire Department. The man in his 50s, who has not been identified, was not wearing his life jacket after falling into the water, though he had it with him, said Capt. Justin Sylvia, a spokesman with the Sacramento Fire Department.

Firefighters were called about 9:20 a.m. Thursday to the 1300 block of Garden Highway after a caller said a man floated down the Sacramento River. A good Samaritan followed the victim as he floated near the confluence with the American River and tried several times to pull him out of the swift currents, Sylvia said. Firefighters arrived to help the man as the good Samaritan had corralled him.

Medics rendered medical aid and took the man to a hospital in critical condition, Sylvia said. Residents should stay out of the river after increased water fell on it from two atmospheric river storms. Anyone seeking to traverse the flows should wear a life jacket year-round, he said.
