Two die in kayak accident on N. Fk. Shenandoah River

Two men were found deceased in the North Fork Shenandoah River after their kayaks overturned on Sunday.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting an overturned kayak in the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, near the 7100 block of Brocks Gap Road, said Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson.

The Sheriff’s Office and the Rockingham County Fire and Rescue responded to the incident. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a second kayak had also overturned in the river, said Hutcheson.

Search efforts began immediately for the missing individuals, said Hutcheson. At approximately 6:00 p.m. two males were found deceased in the river. The identity of the two males are not being released at this time, said Hutcheson. One male, 32, was from Timberville, and the other male, 31, was from Fulks Run.

Two kayakers were found dead on the North Fork of the Shenandoah. Firefighters responding to a report of an "overturned kayak" found two paddlers in the river below Cootes Store. Both were dead, no PFD's in use, no witnesses.

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) - Two Rockingham County men were killed in a fatal kayak accident on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River on Sunday May 19th.

Around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting an overturned kayak that had been spotted on the river near the 7100 block of Brocks Gap Road.

When sheriff’s deputies and fire and rescue personnel arrived on scene they found a second overturned kayak. As the investigation continued around 6 p.m. the Sheriff’s Office located and retrieved the bodies of both men. The victims were a 32-year-old man from Timberville and a 31-year-old man from Fulks Run.
