FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - A man in his mid-30s died on Saturday during a tubing trip after falling into the Arkansas River, east of Portland in Fremont County. Arkansas River Recreation Area (AHRA) rangers were told around 11 a.m. on Saturday that a man was receiving CPR along the Arkansas River.
Florence EMS, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, the Fremont County Coroner, and CPW officers responded to the riverbank to save the man. CPW said their efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the CPW, a group of seven people entered the river near Portland and planned to tube down the river to their campsite a few miles downstream. Further down the river, the group separated, and this is when they believed he fell off his tube into the water. CPW reported that a bystander who was fishing in the river saw him unresponsive in the water and pulled him out. The bystander began CPR until medical officials arrived.
The Fremont County Coroner plans to determine a cause of death, identify him, and notify his family. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim,” said Tom Waters, AHRA park manager.
