Toddler Lost In Whitewater River

(06-01-11) A small child may be dead after he fell from the kayak his parents were navigating on the Whitewater River in Franklin Co. Wed. afternoon (06-01). The boy, a 17-month-old from Independence, Ky., was in the small watercraft when it capsized in an area of rapids on the river near the town of Cedar Grove around 3:00 p.m. The parents, also from Independence, were not wearing lifejackets, but told emergency responders that their son was. Indiana State Police said the device may not have been fastened on correctly.

When they could not find the boy, the parents ran to find help. As of 8:00 p.m., the boy had still not been located. Authorities have gone from calling the effort a recovery mission instead of a rescue. The Whitewater River was at about 5 ft. Wed. afternoon, well below its flood stage of 14 ft. The investigation into the incident is being handled by the Indiana DNR.. Investigators say the canoe being used during the incident was owned by the parents.
