Kayaker drowns on the McCloud River

By Kelli Saam Jul 29 2013

MCCLOUD, Calif. - A kayaker from San Francisco was killed Saturday on the McCloud River in Siskiyou County. The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office said Dorit Hillmann, 54, drowned while kayaking with her husband. Deputies responded on Saturday around 6 p.m. Hillmann's husband said they had been kayaking on the river when their kayak hit a tree in the river. They were thrown from the kayak and then pulled under the tree. Mrs. Hillman was unable to free herself and did not resurface.

The water in the area was very swift and approximately waist deep. Responding deputies were not equipped to recover Hillman from the water and the dive recovery team was asked to respond to the scene. On Sunday the Dive Recovery team recovered the body from the river.
