Colebrook man feared drowned after canoe capsizes in Errol rapids

Searchers in Errol find canoeist's glasses, but no other sign of Colebrook man who capsized in Androscoggin.

ERROL — A Colebrook man is presumed drowned after the canoe he and a friend were in Wednesday afternoon capsized in the area of the Route 26 bridge over the Androscoggin River, Fish and Game officials said. According to officials, Justin Smith, 36, was canoeing with William Benson in the area of the downtown rapids about 3:05 p.m. when their canoe tipped. The two weren’t wearing life jackets, officials said, and when they reached the area known locally as Braggs Bay, Smith went underwater. Benson made it to shore, but Smith never resurfaced, officials said.

Conservation Officer Eric Fluette responded to a report of a canoer needing assistance in a rocky rapid section below the bridge, but could not see Smith. Errol rescue and fire personnel, State Police, the state Marine Patrol and townspeople searched the Braggs Bay area and conservation officers launched boats but were unable to find Smith. Officials said the search for Smith will continue Thursday morning with the Fish and Game Dive Team and Underwater Camera Team joining the search.
