Accident Description

Body of kayaker found on Potomac River near Williamsport

Hagerstown, MD Herald - Mail

The body of a kayaker was found early Monday on the Potomac River between Williamsport and Dam No. 5 Road, a Maryland Natural Resources Police spokeswoman said. Authorities are investigating whether the kayaker, whose name is not being released until his family has been notified, launched from the Maryland or West Virginia side of the river, spokeswoman Candy Thomson said. She said the kayak was found at about 10 p.m. Sunday, and the body was recovered shortly before 4 a.m. Monday by a Maryland Natural Resources Police sergeant. A Maryland State Police helicopter and rescue units from Washington County assisted natural resources police officers with the search, according to Thomson. She said investigators were still in the process of interviewing potential witnesses. The victim's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, Thomson said.
