GOLD BAR, Wash. -- A man has died after falling from his kayak on the Skykomish River Saturday afternoon.

A man kayaking with the victim called 911 to report they were heading through Boulder Drop near Index when the victim fell into the water and became separated from his kayak, according to Lt. Brandon Vargas with Gold Bar Fire.

His friend was eventually able to pull him from the water and they got to the north side of the river bank, realizing his friend was unconscious and had no pulse.

The friend did CPR on the victim for about 30 minutes before hiking about a mile to find someone with a cell phone to call 911.

Rescue crews confirmed the man had died and were still working to recover the body as of Saturday evening, Vargas said.

The friend told rescuers the victim was an experienced kayaker and was wearing all safety equipment. The victim's name has not been released.
