Missouri woman drowns after being trapped against log while kayaking

LESTERVILLE, Mo. (AP) — The Missouri Highway Patrol says a 44-year-old woman drowned during the weekend when she was thrown from her kayak on the Black River.

The patrol says Vanessa Gutierrez, of Arnold, died Saturday when she was pinned against a submerged log and pulled under water.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Reynolds County Coroner Jeff McSpadden said the woman's body was recovered Sunday morning in water that was 2- or 3-feet deep

The drowning was at the Smiley Face take out, a mile south of Lesterville.

Arnold woman drowns after becoming trapped against log while kayaking on Black River

REYNOLDS COUNTY • A woman from Arnold drowned Saturday after her kayak capsized on the Black River. Vanessa J. Gutierrez, 44, was in a kayak that hit a log in the river about 5:50 p.m. Saturday, the Missouri Highway Patrol said. She became lodged against the submerged log and was pulled under the water, the patrol said. The kayak "caught on a sapling and flipped," said Reynolds County Sheriff Tom Stout.
