Accident Description

Barry Tessman has now been autopsied and found to have taken a stout blow to the head. Whether he fell on land or was hit my a rock, boat, etc who knows. Doesn't look like the cold was a factor after all.The year started with the death of noted paddlesport photographer and expedition paddler Barry Tessman, who disappeared when his sprint kayak overturned on California's Lake Isabella on January 16th.

While not a whitewater accident, it was a sobering tragedy for his many friends. No one knows exactly what happened to this veteran class V paddler and expedition boater because he was paddling alone. But flipping in the middle of a large flatwater lake in winter with no backup, even while wearing a wetsuit or drysuit, is a deadly serious matter. CW

Addendum: Barry Tessman has now been autopsied and found to have taken a stout blow to the head. Whether he fell on land or was hit by a rock, boat, etc who knows. Doesn't look like the cold was a factor after all.
