WELLSBORO, PA (WENY) - Pennsylvania conservation officials, emergency crews, and kayaking guides are going on their fourth day of searching for a man who was swept away in the Pine Creek Gorge in Tioga, County.
State officials confirmed to WENY News a recovery effort is underway for Larry Piefer of Mannheim, Pennsylvania. Piefer, who is in his 60s, was with another person on a biyak (type of kayak) when it hit a tree in the water in the gorge creek on Sunday afternoon.
Piefer and the other person were thrown into the water. The other person was immediately rescued by another boater. Piefer was last seen being swept downstream.
Recovery crews have spent the past several days in the water. They’ve searched 45 miles of shoreline.
