The Woodbine stretch is a great piece of whitewater in a beautiful area. The put-in is just above
the Woodbine Campground and trailhead at the end of Road 409 near Nye,MT. Put on just below the
last major drop of the Stillwater Pots(An incredible section of back to back V+ drops with no room
for error) in the large eddy on river left. Aqua Velva is a serious class V drop with no warm-up,
so be paddling well if you put on here. You can easily put in below this drop, though it is the
best on the run... Below Aqua Velva is Snaggletooth, with its large, jagged rock in river center.
Below here are several more good rapids that have huge holes at high flows before the rapids taper
off into very calm water.(We had two creekboats in one hole at the same time that never touched
each other during the fight for freedom...) After a half mile of picturesque flatwater, there is a
small drop leading to the brink of Chrome Mine. This rapid has a convoluted ledge drop at the top
followed by 100 yards of fast, technical water that also has some huge hydraulics at high flows.
Scout carefully. After Chrome Mine is a 1/4 mile of easy water before the take-out on river left.
Look for a turnout down to the river with a small parking area.
On the Pots...
They have been run once top to bottom at substantial flows. They have been run in sections at
various med-low to low flows, and have been run quite a bit at real low flows, when the character
becomes more creeky. Make sure you take a look at this jaw dropping section of whitewater at all
flows, it is well worth your time.
